This beautifully written mystery is spell-binding. I loved the novel’s slow reveal of one secret after another. The characters hold secrets and potentials that I wanted to explore more deeply. And the mystery of all mysteries, that keeps the story in motion, is alluringly eerie.

A David Madsen novel is such a great read! I was thrilled to learn that he had resumed writing and I so enjoyed this book, with its intriguing situations, engaging characters, and impeccable prose – which always seems to turn the right phrase without calling attention to itself. Best of all, in scene after scene, I really felt like I was there, witnessing as the action unfolded, sharing the characters’ experiences. (Without, of course, all the jeopardy that Madsen puts them in.) Recommended!

Wow. Besides the cool title, this novel will not disappoint. I’m not going to spoil anything here by telling you it’s well worth the read. Take a trip back in time and realize that the more things change, the more people are just as determined, confused and searching as they are today. A great mystery rolled into a riveting quest that frays and rebuilds the most durably fragile of all relationships: mother and son.

This tightly written book takes you to another age – but one frighteningly similar to our world today. A page-turner with heart.
–Richard G. Opper – Author of “The Body in the Barrel” and “In Deep and Far Out”

I really liked this novel’s portrait of the early days of Silicon Valley, and how the Bay Area was shaped by the Cold War. Jean Vale, the female lead, is a strong yet troubled woman, but her brainy, adventurous 12 year old son Jimmy steals the show. Get ready for a major plot twist, as well.

This is a unique, very clever, and disturbing look at America and Russia in the near future…. Superb, sinister, shocking and a little too believable.
–Nelson DeMille, Author of “Plum Island”, “The Gold Coast”

The setting for this totally beguiling thriller is so clever it could stand without the plot…. irresistible.
–Kirkus Reviews Starred Review

This superior thriller owes something to Tom Clancy, but much more to Raymond Chandler.
–Publishers Weekly

Strong, suspenseful plot and colorful characters, some of whom we wouldn’t mind getting to know over caviar and a bottle of Stolichnaya… audacious originality.
–The Baltimore Sun

David Madsen has invented a fresh setting for his novel of the near future, and he exploits it well. Bottom line: One of the most unusual mysteries of the year. One of the best, too.
–The San Diego Union

A first-rate thriller with plot, action, characters and social extrapolation expertly combined.
–Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine

The Finns who know the Russians and Russia better than most people, were very impressed by Madsen’s excellent knowledge of the country and its people.
–Licht Agency, Finland

A stunning ‘what-if’ fantasy

BLACK PLUME: The Suppressed Memoirs of Edgar Allan Poe

“Poe enthusiasts will certainly enjoy this warm homage, discovering that Poe’s ominous spirit echoes forever more.”
–Los Angeles Times

“Madsen’s ability to see the world through funeral lenses in impressive. The voice, the mood, the violent, grisly crimes – all these evoke Poe at his most full blown. Madsen’s bizarre thriller would make Poe roll over in his grave and grin.”
–Seattle Post-Intelligencer

“It’s a must for fans of inventive gaslit amusement.”
Kirkus Reviews

“Not only is it an engaging murder mystery, it captures Poe’s rollicking sentence rhythms and mixture of horror and hoaxing.”
